Regular readers of my posts and my tweets will know I love libraries. I mean to write about them again and here are some reasons
- 4th February 2011 is National Library Action Day
- I got five books I needed out for research today. They would have cost me £104.98 and I am an unwaged student at present.
- I saw on Jackie Morris’s beautiful blog Drawing a Line in Time and was appalled to read of Sheffield Central Library having their children’s writing workshop cancelled because it might be ‘political’. Poor beggars didn’t get Ian Macmillan who is a hoot. I have emailed Sheffield in support – I hope you will too: centrallending.library@sheffield.gov.uk
- I read Nick Cross’s entertaining blog Who Ate My Brain?
- I followed the link to Tina Lemon’s amusing post-
- I agree with Philip Pullman’s well-argued yet indignant comments – and certainly couldn’t say it better –
- I watched Kate Mosse’s well-balanced video for the BBC and spotted her along with Michael Eavis in the one for Glastonbury libraries (It has a cracking soundtrack & vox pop)-
- I followed the link from BBC Daily Politics Soapbox to the debate with Ian Duncan Smith-
- I appreciated the tiny, bleak and snowy video Closing Times –
- Ihave been followig Joanne Harris’s ‘The Mayor and The Librarian’ fable on Twitter ( Joannechocolat)
- I got a press statement from Campaign for the Book via Alan Gibbons on Facebook. I quote :
As a consequence of the Comprehensive Spending Review 400 libraries are under threat. Compare this with the situation in South Korea where 180 new libraries are being built.
South Korea is top of the PISA international rankings for competence in reading. In ten years the UK has fallen from seventh to twenty-fifth. This is no time to cut libraries.
